SALMON ARM OBSERVER –April 16/2015
In a performance that many locals are calling the most dominating sporting display on Salmon Arm soil (or ice) since the Legends of Hockey’s 2013 tourney/the 1998 and 1999 LWO soccer team's domination of the August Long tourney, the Legends cruised to their third tourney title in four years.
The Legends combine a rarely witnessed combination of skill (three or four guys), speed (not a whole bunch other than Tyrel and Dollack), fashion sense (unique) and handsomeness (unparalleled) with an underlying dedication to each other that is displayed by working hard every shift. The results speak for themselves. After hearing of the much-hyped Williams Lake / Salmon Arm Huskies' star power, the Legends responded by defeating these tourney newcomers 7-2. Rookie sensation Tyrel Lucas led the way with a hat-trick, assisted by Kevin T and Gussy (who wasn’t on Tyrel's line, but drove him to Salmon Arm and to the rink).
The Legends faced the slightly outmatched Kamloops Forsite squad in the second game. After being scolded by his niece and nephew for his mediocre morning performance, Stanch responded with a hat-trick to lead the way for the Legends in a comfortable 9-2 victory.
With one game left in the round robin, the Legends and defending champion Didsbury had already clinched a birth in the finals. The Legends, with an eye to the less fortunate, proposed that the Sunday morning game would serve as the final. And showing a social consciousness that few would expect from such a handsome group, the Legends donated the now vacant Sunday afternoon ice time to local orphans. And even donated two litres of slightly stale beer to help these kids find their first buzz.
With redemption in mind, a few of the Legends snuck in a 8 hour drinking session followed by a 12-hour sleep the night before the finals. While the game remained scoreless for about a minute, there was a sense in the arena that Didsbury was in trouble this year. After the Lucas/Taillefer duo connected four times, including two extraordinary goals by the rookie Legend and the game opener on that line’s first shift, all that was righteous in the world had been restored. Lucas with four (all assisted by Taillefer), Stanch with a pair, Macdad, Gustafson, Koski and Peach (with the crucial two goal buffer on the five-goal lead tally and later with an uncanny Bambi imitation) all sniped for the Legends. Thomas Vicars was his usual stellar self throughout the tourney and thwarted the poorly dressed Didsbury squad on the rare occasion they made it through the Legends’ stalwart defence core of Dave Dollack, Adam Cornett, The Champ, and Kris Britch.
Brad “Coolio” Young provided just the right combo of cold beers, enjoyable music, Saturday evening television and on-ice energy to earn an invite to next year’s tourney (assuming Butsy isn’t available). Troy Taillefer was last seen skating to centre ice to line up for a faceoff because he couldn’t catch up to the Lucas/K. Taillefer combo as they went down the ice to score. Monty has not been seen since his plan of taking it easy so he was not in too rough of shape for his 6:30am Sunday departure to Penticton went sideways and he found himself at Outlaws.
As a wise man once said, “Damn, it feels good to be a Legend.”
